Join Caesar Chess

We’re seeking dependable, patient, and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Coaches (ages 18+). If you enjoy working with kids and have a passion for chess, we’d love to hear from you.

You don’t need to be a chess expert or have previous teaching experience. A solid understanding of the rules of chess, a willingness to learn, and a positive, leadership-focused attitude are what matter most.

Coaches should be available to lead in-person after-school chess programs at least one afternoon each week in the Birmingham, Alabama area. If you’re ready to make a difference while helping students grow both on and off the chessboard, we encourage you to apply.

Coaching with Caesar Chess is an opportunity to teach, lead, and make a lasting impact on students throughout the Birmingham area. Our after-school chess programs typically meet once a week for about an hour and serve primarily beginner students in grades K–5.

Each class includes an engaging chess lesson followed by guided gameplay, where coaches encourage students, reinforce key concepts, and help every child build confidence and improve their skills. Beyond teaching chess, coaches create a positive, supportive environment where students learn critical thinking, patience, sportsmanship, and problem-solving.

Caesar Chess coaches are independent contractors (1099), not W-2 employees. We provide training, resources, and ongoing support to help you succeed in the classroom. As you gain experience and demonstrate strong coaching abilities, you’ll have opportunities for additional classes and increased earning potential.

Starting Pay: $50 per class

Responsibilities

• Teach engaging, beginner-friendly chess lessons.

• Create a fun, positive, and well-managed classroom environment.

• Bring required class materials (training materials are provided; coaches are responsible for printing any required handouts).

• Supervise students from the start of class until they are released to a parent, guardian, or approved school activity.

• Work collaboratively with Caesar Chess staff and school personnel to ensure a successful program.

• Encourage students while promoting good sportsmanship, confidence, and critical thinking.

Qualifications

• Chess Knowledge: A solid understanding of the rules of chess is required. Stronger playing ability is a plus but not required.

• Working with Children: Experience with children is helpful but not required. We value patience, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.

• Background Check: Must be able to pass a background check and provide a valid government-issued photo ID.

2. Virtual Interview
   If your application is a good fit, we’ll contact you to schedule a brief virtual interview to get to know you better.

3. In-Person Interview
   Qualified applicants will be invited to observe one of our classes and teach a short, 5-minute chess lesson. This gives us an opportunity to see your teaching style, communication skills, and how you interact with students.

4. Join the Team
   If selected, we’ll match you with one or more after-school programs that fit your availability. In many cases, you can begin coaching as soon as the following week.

   From your very first class, you’ll receive training, resources, and ongoing support to help you become a confident and successful Caesar Chess coach.
